Orton & Wenlock Celebrate 50 years in Business
In a few short months we’ll be celebrating the fact that my father took over the Brightlingsea company from Mr. Orton & Mr. Wenlock.
In the lead up to the celebrations we would like to share some of our history with you, and tell you about our commitment to help local people and to protect the environment we live in.
Maurice Johnson Bought Brightlingsea Firm
In 1966 my father bought the company, which at the time was primarily a builders and chandlers.
In 1968 the existing premises at the Waterside in Brightlingsea, was redeveloped by ourselves, with a new Retail / Chandlery outlet for the Boating / Yachting World, which included Boat Sales and Petrol Filling Pumps called The Boat Centre.
The building side of the business was also retained and run from the same location.
Some of the early building projects we were involved in, included a new build housing development in Tiptree, Dean Street in Brightlingsea and further developments in the surrounding North East Essex area.
In the early 70’s the Boat Centre freehold was leased to Morgan Marine on a 30-year lease.
This allowed more time for my Father to focus on the building, developing and the housing side of the business.
Some of the larger building projects included the building of more that 160 dwellings at Bacton near Stowmarket in Suffolk, Capel St Mary and Great Oakley.
After leaving school in 1981, I served a 5 year apprenticeship at E H Ruddocks Electrical Engineers of Brightlingsea and continued for a short time as an approved electrician.
I successfully completed my City & Guilds training and remained at college to complete an electrical design technician’s course as well as all of the electrical installation courses that were available at the time.
Michael Johnson Joins The Company
In 1992, after gaining considerable experience in domestic, commercial and industrial areas of electrical installation I joined the company, on a permanent basis.
The senior director had retired and the time was right to take the business into a new direction, and I would focus on growing the electrical contracting side of the business.
Protecting the reputation, quality of work and customer service of such a long, and well established, respected local company was something I fought for fiercely, and we soon became accredited members of the NICEIC electrical body.
Over the years, Orton & Wenlock have seen their business opportunities grow in line with the expansion of our highly qualified and motivated staff.
Many of the successfully competed electrical projects can be found on our website pages for Domestic, Commercial & Industrial.
One of the First MCS PV Solar Panel UK Companies
In April 2010 I trained and gained the specialist skills required for Orton & Wenlock to become one of the first accredited MCS Photovoltaic Solar Panel installation companies in the UK.
Since then, we have also been proactively developing the Photovoltaic Solar side of the business, for both residential and commercial installations, providing system sizes that range from 2 panel domestic installations, to 400 panel commercial installations.
Feed In Tariff (FIT) payments have been cut by the government, but despite this, a Solar PV System is still a financially viable option, this is because of the latest technology being used to make New PV Systems more efficient.
Here are some of the main reasons we were attracted to offering Solar PV Systems and other Eco Friendly products:
To Reduce Your CO2 Emissions & Carbon Footprint – creating a ‘greener’ environment to protect the planet and our children for the future
To Reduce Your Electricity Bills – so you can keep more of the money you have worked hard to earn and save for
To Give You An Extra Income Source – whether your still in work, or retired, an extra source of income will go a long way and be valuable to you long-term.
I am proud of the fact that we are now in our 6th Year of installing Solar PV Systems and that we’ve helped hundreds of clients save money, earn money and make the world a ‘greener’ place to live.
EV Charing Points, L.E.D Lighting & Renewable Energy Across Essex, Suffolk & Norfolk
In 2013 we were one of the first to install charging points for the new Electric Vehicle Revolution to homeowners and businesses, after completing NICEC EV training program.
We have now successfully completed hundreds of Electric Charing Point installation across the whole of Essex, Suffolk, and Norfolk.
In January 2014 we took delivery of one of the first electric BMW i3 vehicles into the UK, and we were the first BMW i3 sale for the Norwich Cooper BMW Dealership see Eastern Daily Press article below:
More information about commitment to lead the Electric Revolution in the UK can be found on our EV Charging Points Page.
As our business has expanded and grown over the last 50 years, we’ve now become ‘electrical’ specialists, and we will strive to support our customers by continually introducing new and diverse ranges of electrical products and services.
Recent projects have included helping APC successfully relocate their printing business from Romford, to their new location in Lainden Essex, this involved accommodating their Three Phase upgrades, distribution and final connection of machines.
Researching new products and developments is key to helping our clients benefit from the latest technology and innovation, which recently led us to discover new energy efficiency L.E.D. lighting products available for domestic and commercial use.
These were introduced to our range last year, and we’re already helping our clients reduce the amount of energy required to illuminate their premises, which in turn is dramatically reducing their and electricity bills.
We are currently in the process of re-lighting The Parker Garden Company Retail Nurseries in Frinton, Essex using the latest Suspended and Recessed L.ED. Lighting options.
We are excited to be working with GreenSpark Renewables, who are based in Thorpe-le-Soken – working together to install the electrical services to one of the largest ADP (Anerobic Digestion Plants) renewable electricity generation plants in the country.
Looking Forward – The Next 50 Years…
It has been an incredible journey for our family over the last 50 years, and we enjoy being part of a business that helps people save money.
But more importantly, we’re able to make a real difference to the planet, for the future, and for the benefit of our children and grandchildren for generations to come.
I would like to personally thank all of our customers, suppliers and everyone else who has supported us here at Orton & Wenlock –
I am most excited about the future ‘eco’ technological breakthroughs that are on the horizon.
I am dedicated to making sure that Orton & Wenlock will be here for another 50 years, at the forefront, committed to making the world a better place.
Thank you for your support!
